A VERY BIG THANK YOU AND A WONDERFUL RESULT!

The Village Society and its Gardens Open Day Committee are grateful for all the support that the village gave to the 4th Gardens Open Day, and helped us to show the village at its best.

A huge thank you to all those who made the event such a success – sponsors, garden-openers, advertisers, local shops who sold advance programmes, village organisations and individuals who provided refreshments and helped in many other ways, and the garden visitors who battled on despite the relentless heat.

The final figures are still being finalised, but we know that your support has helped raise over £9,500 for local charities.

From June’s Parish Magazine:

A good turn out for the 4th Gardens Open Day will help to raise much needed funds for local charities, to add to more than £20,000 already donated in previous years.

Those who are opening their gardens are working hard to show them at their best, and we hope that when the day arrives, they are able to relax and enjoy talking to their visitors.

There will be 21 gardens open, including Newick Primary School and the Church. In addition to visiting old favourites, you can get new ideas as over half the gardens are new this year.

There will be a wide range of refreshments available throughout the day, including coffee and croissants, traditional ploughman’s lunches, home-made cakes, strawberries and fizz, ice cream and more.

On the Village Green, there will be a helicopter. You can meet the pilot, have a look around and a Prize Draw will offer the chance for 2 lucky couples to win rides during the summer.  A traditional Brass Band will be playing from their wide repertoire which includes hymns, classics, and music from the shows.

The raffle prizes are as good as ever with the first prize being dinner bed and breakfast for one lucky couple at Newick Park Hotel.

Newick Guides will pitch their tents and remind us of yesteryear, to celebrate the centenary of Guiding. There will be a fascinating display of Newick Garden History, with further displays in some of the gardens.

With a Children’s Fair and amusements, plant sales and much more, there is something for all the family. In Allington Place there will be additional activities for children including seed planting and biscuit making.

In the Barn Centre, whilst stopping off for a cup of tea, don’t forget to view the exhibits from the Dolphin Art Group which will include delicate botanical paintings.  An exquisite original watercolour by Gloria Horsfall will be sold to the highest bidder.

Full details of the gardens and other attractions are in the programme which will be on sale in village stores at the beginning of June. Entrance to all the gardens is by programme which costs £5.00 per person. There is no charge for children under 16 when accompanied by an adult. Why not buy your programme in advance at the reduced price of £4.50 and plan your day?

For the first time, the map in our programme will include suggested walking routes. If you have visitors coming, you can let them explore on their own using  the map and signs throughout the village

The village website has photographs of earlier open days and will have up-to date information about events on the day.

We look forward to seeing you on 27 June.

From May’s Parish Magazine:

Although the gardens are the stars of our Open Day, there will be lots of other things to enjoy.

For the children, there will be a fair and a bouncy castle on the Green.  In Allington Place, they will be able to plant seeds, colour and cut out, pot plants, and decorate flower biscuits, all of which they can take home with them as a reminder of their fun day out.  Remember, there is no charge for children on Open Day provided they are accompanied by an adult.

Strolling through gardens is a tranquil activity but, with over 20 gardens to visit, our visitors will need regular sustenance.  Thanks to the support of other village organisations, there will be coffee and croissants, traditional Ploughman’s lunches, home-made cakes, ice creams, afternoon teas, strawberries and fizz, or just a welcome cuppa.

As ever, there are things in the wind, and we will have exciting, eye-catching attractions on the Green on 27th June.  Full details will be in next month’s magazine.  Watch this space and don’t forget the date.

From April’s Parish Magazine:

This month it is time for a few words about our gardens.

As I have had the pleasurable job of viewing each garden for the programme description, it is my turn to write and encourage you to visit the gardens that will be open.  This year we have a wonderful and varied selection in all styles and sizes; 23 in all.  Some are old friends from previous years including our Church and School gardens, but we also have many new ones.

Wild life areas and vegetable plots feature in many this year, but there will also be glorious June displays of flowers (of course, we are all hoping for a sunny summer), roses, perennials, annuals and colourful pots galore.  Some gardens feature great ideas for a small space (even grass that is not grass!) and others have large beautiful old trees.  There is even a nautical theme.

Do you enjoy spotting the unusual hydrangea, or large tree fern, or the rose with the same name as the house, perhaps gazing at beautiful views or just sitting on one of the many seats and admiring other peoples hard work?  It’s all there in our gardens.  Why not purchase your programme in advance taking advantage of the reduction, and give yourself time to plan your visits before the day.  Our garden owners are all looking forward to welcoming you to their gardens, talking to you and even perhaps offering a little advice on how to “grow your own”.

Finally, there will be chance to purchase a new, interesting, or unusual plant to take home for your own garden from one of the two specialist plant nurseries on the Green.

We do hope you will feel that this is a day not to be missed and look forward to seeing you on 27 June.

From March’s Parish Magazine:

As countdown to the 4th Gardens Open Day on the 27 June 2010 gathers pace, the Gardens Open Day Team of the Newick Village Society thought that readers would be interested in knowing the charities that will be supported from the proceeds of this year’s event.

The nominated charities are Newick Village Hall, St Peter & St James Hospice, Newick Day Care Centre, Headway Hurstwood Park and, for the first time, Newick Distress Trust.

The owners of Ketches are opening their garden for the first time this year, and have kindly agreed to the St Peter & St James Hospice hosting a ‘fizz and strawberries’ fund raising bar in their garden.

Many other refreshment opportunities and attractions will be available on the day and full details will be published in the Gardens Open Day programme. The programme will be available for Advance Purchase from local participating shops in early June.

From February’s Parish Magazine:

The great day is getting closer. The event will include a gazebo display on the Village Green showing a bit of history of gardens and flowers in Newick over the years. Can you help us? You may have some photographs of Newick gardens of years ago which could be copied and displayed. Or perhaps some ancient seed catalogues or some 1950’s gardening magazines. Or some old newspaper articles which mention Newick gardens or flowers. We would be delighted to receive anything which you feel would be of interest to visitors. Please ring either Glenys Timmons (01825 722563) or Tony Turk (01825 723273).

Newick has taken a pride in its gardens over very many years. In 1846 the Sussex Express newspaper praised the local cottagers, stating that “...in neatness of appearance, their little gardens may vie with any in the kingdom...” Similarly, in 1853, the newspaper referred to “...the habits of the whole of the rural population of the district, whose characteristic love for neatness of their gardens and gaiety of their flower borders before their cottages is even more striking now than at any other period...”  The 1899 Newick Horticultural Society prizes for the best cultivated flower gardens went to William Martin, Robert Grover and John Chatfield.

From January's Parish Magazine:

By the time you read this, hopefully the rains will have abated and we can venture out into our gardens and plan ahead for the oncoming Spring.

At the moment, the area outside our conservatory resembles a scene from the battlefields of the Somme.  A pretty picture it is not!

With Newick Gardens Open Day on the calendar again this year (a biennial event started in 2004), our latest project is to redirect a sloping narrow footpath making it less slippery and treacherous for us in our advancing years..., as well as the many visitors we hope to welcome to the garden on 27 June 2010.

Opening and sharing a garden with others is a truly rewarding experience.  People are incredibly generous and seem genuinely interested and appreciative.  There really is no need to fret over a less than perfect lawn or scraggly unpruned lavender bushes.  It’s not a competition, nor are we trying to emulate designer gardens at Chelsea Flower Show.

It’s a fun, fundraising event benefitting four or five local charities; an occasion whereby the community works together, engendering an energy and enthusiasm that reflects the spirit and goodwill of the people of Newick.  In 2008, a whopping £9700 was distributed to the charities.

Now go put the kettle on, get the seed catalogues out, start dreaming, start planning and you too can become a ‘Garden Owner’ ( you get to wear a badge!!!) for Newick Gardens Open Day 2010.  Your Village needs you.

Happy New Year

Peter and Jean Vincent

From December's Parish Magazine:

The leaves are swept, and gardens have been tidied for Winter.  This is traditionally the time when gardeners settle down indoors to plan their gardening activities for the year ahead.

For over twenty households in Newick 27 June 2010 will be an important  date.  They will be opening their gardens to the  public in support of Newick Gardens Open Day and, by sharing their gardens with others, they will help to raise much needed funds for local charities.

We will be providing advice and support for those who have agreed to join in, and hope that those who are opening for the first time will gain as much enjoyment from their involvement as garden owners have in previous years.

We are grateful also to those village organisations wha have already offered help. If there are others who would like to be involved in some way, please let us know.
